Designing the Home Depot Mobile App for Enhanced SKU Discovery

The focus was on creating a user-friendly interface that would allow customers to effortlessly locate and learn about products, enhancing their in-store shop

Objective: The primary goal of this project was to redesign the Home Depot mobile app to significantly improve the process of finding SKU (Stock Keeping Unit) items within the store. The focus was on creating a user-friendly interface that would allow customers to effortlessly locate and learn about products, enhancing their in-store shopping experience.

Target Audience: This feature was aimed at Home Depot's diverse customer base, including DIY enthusiasts, professional contractors, and casual shoppers who seek efficiency and accuracy when shopping in-store.

Scope of Work:

  1. User Experience Design: The key component was to streamline the user experience for SKU discovery. This involved understanding customer behaviors, pain points, and needs through user research, interviews, and surveys.
  2. User Interface Redesign: The user interface was redesigned to be more intuitive and easy to navigate. This included the implementation of an effective search function, clear categorization of products, and visually appealing product displays.
  3. Integration with In-Store Navigation: A significant feature was integrating the app with in-store navigation systems. This allowed customers to find the exact location of a SKU within the store, saving time and improving the shopping experience.
  4. Testing and Iteration: Prototyping and user testing were conducted iteratively to refine the app. Feedback from real users was crucial in making necessary adjustments and ensuring the app’s functionality and user-friendliness.
  5. Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams: The project involved close collaboration with various teams, including IT, marketing, and store operations, to ensure that the digital experience was seamlessly integrated with the physical store environment.

Challenges and Solutions:

  • A major challenge was designing a system that could accurately guide users to the specific location of items in vast store layouts. This was addressed by integrating the app with advanced in-store navigation and mapping technologies.
  • Ensuring real-time inventory updates within the app was another challenge, which was solved by syncing the app with the store's inventory management system.

Outcome:The project successfully culminated in an enhanced version of the Home Depot mobile app, which was well-received by customers for its ease of use and efficient SKU discovery feature. The app not only improved the shopping experience for users but also positioned Home Depot as a leader in leveraging technology to enhance customer service in retail.
